Day 10- Today I am thankful for my mom and dad.
I reached a milestone in my life today...I turned the Big 3-0! I am so thankful for my mom and dad who have loved me unconditionally even before they knew me. My mom and dad did not even have 9-months to get used to the idea that I would be joining their family. They had always contemplated adoption and found out I was coming about two weeks before I was scheduled to arrive in the United States. That did not give my mom much time for nesting, HA.
When I first arrived in the United States, I've been told my mom was the only person I wanted to hold me. Maybe it's because she had the Snoopy juice cup, but I'd like to think it's because deep down, I knew it was the beginning of a special bond. A bond that only a mother and daughter can know.
If you know me at all, you know that I'm a huge fan of Memphis State (yes, I still call it that) and Atlanta Braves. I blame my Pops! Like I mentioned, my parents did not have a lot of notice that I was coming. At that time in their lives, my mom was just finishing up her residency (or something doctor-esque??). That meant working long hours at the hospital and sometimes even overnight in the ER. On those nights, my dad and I would go visit my aunt and uncle (see November 5th post). My dad, my uncle, and my cousin Jeff would no doubt be watching some sporting event (and probably talking about another sporting event at the same time). From 18-months of age, I was introduced to the Memphis Tigers and Atlanta Braves and it will forever be a part of who I am!
Without the love of my mom and dad, I don't even know if I would have been able to celebrate my 30th birthday. I don't know what my life was like before being adopted. But, it doesn't matter. What matter is I was given a great mother and father, who have taught me it's not about "what was" but what really matters is "what can I do with the opportunity I've been given" and I will forever love my Mom and Pops.
Day 11- Today I am thankful for Veterans.
For all of those who have ever served, who are currently serving, or who will serve our country in the future, I humbly say "Thank You." A simple thank-you is not even enough. I did not grow up in a military family, so I cannot even begin to imagine what that life is like. My hope and prayer is that today is a reminder that we should appreciate our service men and women, not just on Veteran's Day, but everyday.
Until next time...BE THANKFUL
