Valentine's Day has never been a "big deal" to me. When I was a little girl, I knew I'd get a box of chocolates and those heart candies that have little sayings on them. In college, I always knew I'd get something great from my parents either in the mail (which is a big deal in college) or when they came to visit. I mostly looked forward to the money that I hoped would be in the card. Now, I really appreciate if I get money from my parents! But, other than that, I kinda joke that Valentine's Day is more like Single Awareness Day. Yes, I'm being sarcastic but there is a slight bit of truth to that.
This year, as I was checking Facebook, my friend Glenn Miller had a post that said, "Make today more about philos than eros. I dare you."
Now, here's your theological lesson for the day. The word "love" in the English language is very hard to interpret. It's a word that is thrown around with so many meanings. I don't "love" pizza in the same way I "love" my friends (philos- a brotherly-type love). I don't "love" my friends in the same way I "love" my spouse (eros- a romantic or erotic-type love). Actually, I don't have a spouse but if I did... And I don't "love" my spouse (that I don't have) the same way that Jesus loves him, or her, if you happen to be a guy (agape- unconditional love). Ok, enough theology.
Back to my friend's post...it really got me thinking. Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic holiday. Could Valentine's Day be a day that we really just express philos- that brotherly love that, really, we should show to everyone, everyday. I'm pretty sure Valentine's Day will continue to be about that special someone, especially since we are so driven by consumerism. But, I'd like to take a bite out of this Hallmark holiday and take a moment to express my heartfelt love and appreciation to all of my friends and family. And to all those I come in contact with who I don't know...I'd like to hope I will always treat you in a way that expresses true brotherly love.
Until next time...HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
